Featured Members’ Trip to Arsenal

From Wei Ming:

It was a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon, I was so nervous as I alighted Holloway Station surrounded by fanatics wearing the famous red and white jerseys. After all, it was my first time watching Arsenal in their home ground!

After collecting my tickets, I have time to make my way around the fantastic stadium reading inspirational stories and history about Arsenal. I almost could not believe that I am actually in the stadium itself. Joining many fans watching the earlier West Ham vs Leicester City’s game, almost all of us were disappointed that the Foxes are able to grab a single point against the Hammers via a last second penalty kick. As crowd begin to gather, I make my way into the stadium and was in awe of how grand it is. Certainly fit for a team like Arsenal!

I was glad to find out that a few fellow Singaporean Gooners were seated beside me and we had a long chat about how the season was going and also our history of supporting Arsenal. The game started and I was slightly disappointed to see a lack of vocal support from the home supporters, probably due to the recent disappointing results. On the other hand, I was very amazed by how the Crystal Palace fans were singing loud and proudly. The game ended 1-1 and I thought it was a rather disappointing result when we could have won easily. But nonetheless, the experience visiting Emirates stadium and watching a Premier League match is invaluable for all Arsenal and football fans, certainly an experience of a lifetime!

Lastly, I would recommend all Gooners to visit the old Highbury Stadium (now Highbury Square). Although it had been developed into a residential complex, the old facade of the stadium remains. It does make me wonder how was the atmosphere like during the Highbury days, the Invincibles played there after all!
