Our member Linda Ong shares his visit to The Arsenal to watch the team take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in December 2025.
There was an air of jubilation when we arrived at the Emirates well before the 8pm kickoff. We were expecting a goal-fest against bottom of the table Wolves and we were not the only ones who shared this sentiment. Viza, one of the staff in the hotel we were staying in and an Arsenal fan, saw us walk out of the lobby and immediately went, “Oh you are going to the game? It’s going to be 8 nil yeah!” Cue fist bumps all round. Even while walking towards the stadium in the cold, we could hear fans going “It’s going to be 5 nil!”
Alas, it was not meant to be. The first half ended in a turgid 0-0. But as this was our first ever match at the Emirates, we were determined to stay positive. The stadium was full and the fans were in good voice. We just had to keep the faith.
Ten minutes into the second half Arteta made 3 substitutions – Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Trossard came on. There was a palpable improvement in the speed of our passing. The deadlock was finally broken when Saka’s excellent cross resulted in a hilarious Wolves’ own goal. The cheers in the stadium were deafening. Game on. Surely now we will put the game to bed.
We waited and waited but the goals did not come. And then, at the 90th minute, Wolves equalized right in front of us at the Clock End. No way. We watched in disbelief as the Wolves players and the away fans celebrated right under our noses. Is this what we travelled all this way for?
The despair among the Arsenal faithful quickly coagulated into a sense of urgency, especially when it was announced that there would be 6 mins of added time. The crowd urged the team on, and the team responded quickly in getting the ball up to Wolves’ half. Finally, thanks to yet another Saka cross, Wolves scored for the Arsenal again and we won right at the death. The relief in the stadium was clear. And when the referee finally blew the whistle, the stadium erupted in loud cheers. Thank God!
It was only after the game that we realized that our voices were all hoarse from shouting. We had a nice time taking some photos with the other Singaporean fans who sat next to us, before slowly leaving the stadium. What a fun night! Very special thanks to Arsenal SG and Dhanesh for making this happen. We are sure to be back again. Hopefully for our next match, the team will score their own goals, instead of relying on the opposition to score all their goals for them!
